Building Common Discounts: 5 Step-by-Step Setups

Step-by-step setups for the five discounts most organizations build: multi-enrollment, sibling, member perks, early bird and promo codes.

Written by Loris Lamarque

The Discounts builder lets you create almost any kind of offer: sibling rates, member perks, early-bird pricing, multi-enrollment savings and promo codes for your marketing campaigns. Because it's so flexible, it can take a few tries to find the right combination of settings for what you have in mind.

This article walks through the five discounts most organizations build, step by step. Each one tells you which discount type to pick and exactly what to set on each step, so you can copy the setup and adjust the names, items and percentages to fit your own programs. The numbered badges in each screenshot match the step numbers in that section.

Note: your existing promo codes still show and still work. They now live on the Discounts page alongside any new discounts you create.

How the Discounts builder works

Go to Marketing → Discounts and click + Discount. You'll be asked to pick a discount type first:

Discount type

Use it when

Examples in this article

Amount off specific items

The discount applies to selected items or item categories. Pair it with Has purchased before eligibility when the discount should depend on something the household bought in the past.

Sibling discount (added later), member perks, early-bird pricing

Amount off the whole order

The discount comes off the whole cart, optionally once a minimum spend or item count is met.

Promo code with a minimum spend

Bundled discount

Buying one thing unlocks a discount on another in the same checkout.

Multi-enrollment, sibling discount (same cart)

Every discount then goes through the same four steps, listed on the left of the window. Click Continue to move between them and Save on the last one.

  • Basic info: the Name (up to 30 characters, shown to customers), a Description (up to 200 characters, also shown to customers), and the Method: Automatic discount (applies to every eligible cart, no customer action needed) or Requires a code (the customer enters a code at checkout). Discount names must be unique.

  • Rules: what is discounted, by how much, and the Active dates (Always on or a Date range). The fields on this step depend on the discount type.

  • Eligibility: who can get it: All customers, Specific groups or Has purchased before.

  • Settings: Limit usage across organization, Limit usage by household, Allow combinations (choose whether it can combine with Product discounts and/or Order discounts) and Show on discovery page (residents browsing eligible items see that a discount is available).

Tip: when you search for items on any step, check the ones you want and click Save in the search panel to add them. They then appear as tags under the search box.

1. Multi-enrollment discount across a category

What it does: the first program in the cart is full price, and each additional program in the same category is 25% off. It applies automatically, with no code, so families enrolling several kids save without having to ask.

Discount type: Bundled discount

  1. Go to Marketing → Discounts, click + Discount and choose Bundled discount.

  2. On Basic info, enter a name (for example "Multi-Enrollment Savings") and a description such as "Save 25% on each additional program in the same order." Leave Automatic discount selected and click Continue.

  3. On Rules, under What triggers the discount, leave By item count selected. Set How many to 1, set Of what to Item categories and click Programs.

  4. Under What the customer gets, set Which items to Item categories and click Programs. In How many, enter the most additional programs one order can discount (for example 5). Set Discount to Percentage off and enter 25 as the Reward value.

  5. Under Active dates, choose Always on, or keep Date range if this is a seasonal offer. Click Continue.

  6. On Eligibility, leave All customers selected and click Continue.

  7. On Settings, turn on Show on discovery page if you want families to see the offer before they check out, then click Save.

Tip: a Bundled discount only looks at what's in the cart at the same time. A family that registers one child today and a second child next week won't get this discount on the second registration. If you want that, use the "added later" setup in the next section.

2. Sibling discounts

There are two ways to set up a sibling discount, and the one you choose depends on when families usually sign up. Many organizations create both.

If the family…

Use

Discount type

Registers everyone together in one checkout

Option A: in the same cart

Bundled discount

Already bought a membership and adds a family member later

Option B: added later

Amount off specific items with Has purchased before

Option A: Sibling discount in the same cart (tiered)

What it does: buying one qualifying membership makes up to a set number of additional memberships 50% off. Anything beyond that number is full price. You set the cap once, so one discount covers households of every size.

  1. Go to Marketing → Discounts, click + Discount and choose Bundled discount.

  2. On Basic info, enter a name (for example "Sibling Rate - Same Cart") and a description such as "50% off additional family memberships purchased together." Leave Automatic discount selected and click Continue.

  3. On Rules, under What triggers the discount, set How many to 1 and Of what to Specific items. Search for the qualifying membership, check it and click Save.

  4. Under What the customer gets, set Which items to Specific items and add the membership the siblings are buying. In How many, enter the most discounted memberships one household can get in a single order (for example 3). Set Discount to Percentage off and enter 50 as the Reward value. (4)

  5. Under Active dates, choose Always on and click Continue.

  6. On Eligibility, leave All customers selected and click Continue.

  7. On Settings, set any usage limits you need, turn on Show on discovery page if you'd like, and click Save.

Note: the qualifying item and the discounted item can be the same membership. For example: buy one individual pool membership, and up to 3 more are 50% off. With a cap of 3, a fifth membership in the same order is full price.

Option B: Sibling discount added later

What it does: a household that has already bought a qualifying membership gets 50% off the target membership whenever it comes back to add another family member. It applies automatically at checkout. Households with no qualifying purchase pay full price.

  1. Go to Marketing → Discounts, click + Discount and choose Amount off specific items.

  2. On Basic info, enter a name (for example "Sibling Rate - Added Later") and a description such as "50% off for households that already hold a membership." Leave Automatic discount selected and click Continue.

  3. On Rules, under Applies to, choose Specific items, search for the target membership (the one the sibling is buying), check it and click Save. Under Value, keep % selected and enter 50. Choose Always on under Active dates, then click Continue.

  4. On Eligibility, choose Has purchased before, search for the qualifying membership (the one the household already owns), check it and click Save. Click Continue. (4)

  5. On Settings, choose whether to Allow combinations and Show on discovery page, then click Save.

Tip: this discount checks the household's purchase history, not what's in the cart, so the first membership has to be bought in an earlier checkout. If a family buys both at once, Option A is what gives them the sibling rate.

3. Member perk on add-ons

What it does: households that own a specific membership get a discount on related items, such as 20% off swim diapers, concessions and cabana rentals for aquatics members. Non-members pay full price for the same items.

Discount type: Amount off specific items

  1. Go to Marketing → Discounts, click + Discount and choose Amount off specific items.

  2. On Basic info, enter a name (for example "Aquatics Member Perk") and a description such as "Aquatics members save 20% on pool add-ons." Leave Automatic discount selected and click Continue.

  3. On Rules, under Applies to, choose Specific items. Search for each add-on (store items show up in the same search as programs and memberships), check them and click Save. Under Value, keep % selected and enter 20, then click Continue.

  4. On Eligibility, choose Has purchased before, search for the membership that unlocks the perk (for example your outdoor aquatics membership), check it and click Save. Click Continue.

  5. On Settings, choose whether to Allow combinations, then click Save.

Tip: to discount everything in a category instead of picking items one by one, choose Item categories under Applies to and click Store items.

Note: discount indicators don't appear on store item pages yet, so members will see the savings in their cart and at checkout rather than on the item itself.

4. Early-bird registration window

What it does: selected programs are a set percentage off when families register between two dates. It rewards early sign-ups, stops applying after the end date, and can stack with other discounts.

Discount type: Amount off specific items

  1. Go to Marketing → Discounts, click + Discount and choose Amount off specific items.

  2. On Basic info, enter a name (for example "Summer Early Bird") and a description such as "Register by April 30 and save 10%." Leave Automatic discount selected and click Continue.

  3. On Rules, under Applies to, choose Specific items, search for the programs you want to include, check them and click Save. Under Value, keep % selected and enter 10. (3)

  4. Under Active dates, keep Date range selected and set the start and end dates of your early-bird window. Click Continue. (4)

  5. On Eligibility, leave All customers selected and click Continue.

  6. On Settings, turn on Allow combinations and keep Product discounts and Order discounts checked so the early-bird discount can stack with others. Turn on Show on discovery page to advertise the savings on each program's page. Click Save.

Tip: the discount stops applying automatically once the end date passes, so there's nothing to turn off afterward.

5. Promo code with a minimum spend

What it does: a code you can share in newsletters, social posts or flyers. It takes 25% off the whole order when the subtotal is $100 or more. Orders under $100 get no discount.

Discount type: Amount off the whole order

  1. Go to Marketing → Discounts, click + Discount and choose Amount off the whole order.

  2. On Basic info, enter the name and a description such as "25% off orders of $100 or more." Under Method, choose Requires a code. The code matches the discount's name, so use the name you want customers to type (for example FALL25), without emoji or special characters. Click Continue.

  3. On Rules, under Minimum requirements, choose Minimum purchase amount and enter 100. Under Value, keep % selected and enter 25. Set a Date range under Active dates if the campaign has an end date. Click Continue. (3)

  4. On Eligibility, leave All customers selected and click Continue.

  5. On Settings, turn on Limit usage across organization or Limit usage by household if you want to cap redemptions, then click Save.

Customers enter the code at checkout, and staff can enter it in the Discount code box when checking out on a customer's behalf. The code has to match the discount name exactly, including any emoji or symbols, so keep code names simple.

If the order is under $100, the code isn't applied and the customer sees: "This discount does not apply to the current order or a better discount was selected." The message doesn't mention the minimum, so include the $100 threshold in the discount's Description and in your marketing. If the cart drops below $100 after the code is applied (for example, an item is removed), the code comes off automatically.

Note: anyone who has the code can use it, so treat a promo code as public once you send it out. If a rate should only go to a specific group, such as residents or employees, use an automatic discount with Specific groups eligibility instead.

How discounts behave at checkout

What residents see

On the item's page. When Show on discovery page is turned on, the program, membership or event page shows a discounts available panel under the price, listing each automatic discount by name (1). Hovering the info icon next to a discount shows its Description, which is why it's worth writing that field for residents.

At checkout. Residents type promo codes into the Discount code box and click Apply. The applied code shows as a tag under the box, where they can remove it with the X (2). The savings appear in two places: on the item, where 1 Discount expands to show the original price, the discount and the new total, and in the order Summary under Discounts (3). The processing fee is calculated on the discounted amount, so residents save on the fee too.

When a code doesn't apply. If the cart doesn't qualify (for example, it's under the minimum spend), the box turns red and the resident sees "This discount does not apply to the current order or a better discount was selected." (4). The price stays the same.

Tip: automatic discounts show up the same way on the item and in the Summary, labeled with the discount's name. Residents don't need to enter anything.

Rules to know

  • Automatic discounts apply on their own, as soon as an eligible item is added to the cart. This also happens when staff check out on a customer's behalf, with no warning first.

  • If two discounts can't combine, the customer gets the better one. This applies between two automatic discounts, and between an automatic discount and a promo code. Turn on Allow combinations when you want discounts to stack.

  • Staff can't remove an automatic discount from a customer's cart. This keeps pricing consistent no matter who is at the front desk.

  • Price overrides come first. If staff override an item's price, the discount is recalculated on the new price. It's removed if the item no longer qualifies (for example, the cart drops below a minimum spend).

  • Payment plans lock in the discount at checkout, and every future installment is charged at the discounted amount.

  • Taxes, fees and security deposits are never discounted.

  • Receipts show the code for promo code discounts, and the discount name for automatic ones.

  • Discovery page indicators show only on an item's detail page, not in browse or search results, and only for automatic discounts that are active.

Tracking your discounts

To see how your discounts are being used, go to Reports → Report Library and open the Discounts section. The Discount Summary Report shows one row per discount with its redemption count and total amount discounted. The Discount Detail Report shows every individual redemption. Both reports support search, filters, sorting and CSV export.
