Discounts: How They Work and Where to Find Them

What discounts are, where to find them, the three discount types, every builder setting and how discounts behave at checkout.

Written by Loris Lamarque

Discounts let you lower the price of what you sell on Rec, either automatically for everyone who qualifies or through a code you share. You can use them for sibling rates, member perks, early-bird pricing, multi-enrollment savings, group rates and promo codes for your marketing campaigns.

This article explains how discounts work: where to find them, the three discount types, every setting in the builder and what your customers see at checkout. When you're ready to build one, Building Common Discounts: 5 Step-by-Step Setups walks through the five most common discounts step by step.

Note: nothing has been removed. The Promo Codes page is now the Discounts page, and your existing promo codes still show there and still work.

Where to find Discounts

Go to Marketing → Discounts. This page lists every discount and promo code in your organization. To create a new one, click + Discount.

Automatic discounts vs. promo codes

Every discount uses one of two methods, which you choose on the first step of the builder:

Method

How it works

Good for

Automatic discount

Applies on its own to every cart that qualifies. The customer doesn't need to do anything.

Sibling rates, member perks, early-bird pricing, multi-enrollment savings, group rates

Requires a code

Applies only when a customer (or staff member at checkout) enters the code in the Discount code box.

Marketing campaigns, newsletters, flyers, one-off promotions

Note: anyone who has a code can use it, so treat a promo code as public once you share it. If a rate should only go to a specific group, such as residents, seniors or employees, use an automatic discount with Specific groups eligibility instead.

The 3 discount types

After you click + Discount, you pick a discount type. The type decides what the discount is based on and which fields you see on the Rules step.

Discount type

What it does

Examples

Amount off specific items

Takes a percentage or fixed amount off each eligible item. You choose the items one by one or pick whole item categories.

Early-bird pricing on summer camps, member perks on add-ons, a sibling rate for households that already own a membership

Amount off the whole order

Takes a percentage or fixed amount off the whole cart, optionally only once a minimum spend or number of items is reached.

"25% off orders of $100 or more" promo code

Bundled discount

Buying one thing unlocks a discount on another in the same checkout.

Multi-enrollment savings, a sibling rate when everyone registers together, buy one get one

Tip: a Bundled discount only looks at what's in the cart right now. If the discount should depend on something the household bought in the past, use Amount off specific items with Has purchased before eligibility.

Building a discount: the four steps

Every discount goes through the same four steps, listed on the left of the builder. Click Continue to move between them and Save on the last one.

Step 1: Basic info

Field

What to enter

Name

Up to 30 characters, shown to customers. Names must be unique. For a promo code, the name is the code customers type, so keep it simple (for example FALL25) and avoid emoji or special characters.

Description

Up to 200 characters, shown to customers when they hover the info icon next to the discount. Use it to explain the conditions, such as a minimum spend.

Method

Automatic discount or Requires a code (see above).

Step 2: Rules

This step sets what is discounted and by how much. The fields depend on the discount type.

Amount off specific items

  • Applies to: Specific items (search, check the items you want and click Save) or Item categories (Programs, Instant book rentals, Store items, Memberships and passes, Events).

  • Value: a percentage (%) or fixed dollar amount ($) off each eligible item.

  • Active dates: Always on or a Date range.

Amount off the whole order

  • Minimum requirements: No minimum requirements, Minimum purchase amount or Minimum quantity of items.

  • Value: a percentage or fixed dollar amount off the order.

  • Active dates: Always on or a Date range.

Bundled discount

  • What triggers the discount: By item count or By cart total, then How many and Of what (Any item, Specific items or Item categories).

  • What the customer gets: How many items are discounted, Which items, and the Discount: Free, Percentage off, Fixed amount off or Fixed bundle price, with its Reward value. You can also Set a maximum number of uses per order.

  • Active dates: Always on or a Date range.

Tip: a discount with a Date range stops applying on its own once the end date passes, so there's nothing to turn off afterward.

Step 3: Eligibility

Option

Who gets the discount

All customers

Anyone whose cart meets the rules.

Specific groups

Only customers in the groups you choose, such as residents, seniors or staff.

Has purchased before

Only households that have already bought the items you choose, such as a specific membership.

Tip: residents can see which groups they belong to in their account. If one of them expects a group discount and doesn't get it, check that they're in the group. Discounts: What Groups Qualify and How to Access Them explains this from the resident's side.

Step 4: Settings

Setting

What it does

Limit usage across organization

Caps the total number of times the discount can be used.

Limit usage by household

Caps how many times each household can use it.

Allow combinations

Lets the discount stack with other Product discounts and/or Order discounts. When it's off and two discounts apply, the customer gets the better one.

Show on discovery page

Shows residents that a discount is available on the item's page, before they check out.

What residents see

  • On the item's page: when Show on discovery page is on, program, membership and event pages show a discounts available panel under the price, listing each active automatic discount by name.

  • At checkout: residents enter promo codes in the Discount code box and click Apply. The savings show on the item and under Discounts in the order Summary. Automatic discounts appear the same way, labeled with the discount's name.

  • When a code doesn't apply: the resident sees "This discount does not apply to the current order or a better discount was selected." The message doesn't explain why, so put conditions like a minimum spend in the Description.

For screenshots of each of these, see the checkout section of Building Common Discounts.

Rules to know

  • Automatic discounts apply on their own as soon as an eligible item is in the cart, including when staff check out on a customer's behalf. Staff can also enter promo codes at checkout.

  • If two discounts can't combine, the customer gets the better one. This applies between two automatic discounts and between an automatic discount and a promo code.

  • Staff can't remove an automatic discount from a cart. This keeps pricing consistent no matter who is at the front desk.

  • Price overrides come first. If staff override an item's price, the discount is calculated on the new price.

  • Payment plans and auto-renewing memberships lock in the discount at the first checkout. Later installments and renewals are charged at the discounted amount.

  • Taxes, fees and security deposits are never discounted.

  • Receipts show the code for promo code discounts and the discount name for automatic ones.

  • Discovery page indicators show only on an item's detail page, not in browse or search results, and not on store items.

Tracking your discounts

Go to Reports → Report Library and open the Discounts section:

  • Discount Summary Report: one row per discount, with its redemption count and total amount discounted.

  • Discount Detail Report: every individual redemption.

Both reports support search, filters, sorting and CSV export.
